Padre Pio and the Stigmata

Roger Bolton, who is the host of the BBC radio program Sunday that airs in the UK and Canada interviewed Dr. Mario Martinez to coincide with the canonization of Padre Pio on June 16th 2002. Dr. Martinez investigates cases of stigmata (wounds resembling those of Christ) for the Catholic Church and was asked to offer a scientific explanation of this fascinating phenomenon.

The BBC Radio Interview with Roger Bolton

Padre Pio was a Capuchin friar from Southern Italy who for 50 years displayed on his body the stigmata, or the wounds of Christ. Although he was canonized, was he a fraud, was the stigmata inflicted by hand? Roger spoke to Dr. Mario Martinez, a clinical psychologist and a Catholic, who has investigated cases of stigmata for the Catholic Church. Roger asked Dr. Martinez how he accounted for cases that didn't seem to be self-inflicted.
