SECRETS OF THE CENTENARIANS: DEBUNKING THE MYTHS OF AGING |

People living over hundred years are the fastest growing segment of the population in the US. Contrary to “established” scientific theories of aging, these centenarians live lives free of major illnesses and cognitive deterioration. More importantly, in this workshop, Dr. Martinez explains how “good genetics” and obsessive commitments to “healthy” life styles are not the main contributing factors to longevity and wellness. Participants will learn the difference between growing older and aging and why cultural portals (youth, middle age, retirement, senior citizenship) have greater influence on health and illness than our genetics. Recent cultural epidemiological research challenges conventional wisdom regarding longevity and is beginning to debunk the following myths: Genetics determines longevity – Vegetarians live longer – All stress is harmful – Alzheimer’s is inevitable – “Tea Totalers” are healthier – Anger should be avoided - If you live long enough, you will die of cancer – Aging brain equals aging mind - and many other misconceptions. |

He specializes in psychoneuroimmunology and has published numerous professional articles on biocognition. In his new psychological novel “The Man from Autumn”, he explores how the mysterious stigmata can help the health sciences understand the Biocognitive Code that wounds and heals the body. Dr. Martinez has investigated cases of alleged stigmata for the Catholic Church, the BBC and National Geographic. |
