WORKSHOP

FROM STIGMATA TO FIBROMYALGIA: UNDERSTANDING THE MIND-BODY CODE

Mario E. Martinez, Psy.D.

In this workshop Dr. Martinez will discuss how his investigations of stigmata (Christ-like wounds resisting healing), can help us understand the mind-body code of thoughts and emotions that can wound or heal our biology. In particular, he will discuss fibromyalgia and other autoimmune disorders as well as psychiatric problems from a biocognitive psychology perspective that views guilt-related suffering as a major component of illness. Dr. Martinez defines a dysfunctional mind-body code as a dire conflict between our bioethical premises (moral beliefs) and our behavior. When a bioethical violation remains unresolved, it can triggers a chronic stress response that compromises our biological functions at their most genetically vulnerable levels. Western health sciences have concentrated on studying pathological processes and destructive emotions, while ignoring the more evolved biocognitive experiences such as magnanimous love, empathic leaps and inclusive compassion. Recent work in psychoneuroimmunology suggests the immune system is enhanced by the more evolved mind-body expressions, and is negatively affected by fear-based beliefs and emotions. Participants will learn how to change destructive biocognitions that punish our transgressions without forgiveness and that pay attention only when health fails.

Dr. Martinez is a clinical psychologist who lectures worldwide on his theory of Biocognition (how cultural beliefs affect health and longevity. He specializes in psychoneuroimmunology and has published numerous professional articles on biocognition. In his new psychological novel “The Man from Autumn”, he explores how modern cognitive science and Christian mystical theology can converge to address stigmata as well as psycho-spiritual conflicts that mimic psychiatric disorders. Dr. Martinez has investigated cases of alleged stigmata for the Catholic Church, the BBC and National Geographic
