HOW CULTURAL BELIEFS AFFECT HEALTH, ILLNESS, AND LONGEVITY |
| Mario E. Martinez, Psy.D. |
Dr. Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist who has developed The Private Journey of Self training series to teach his theory of Biocognition. The theory proposes that mind, body, and historical culture communicate within a bioinformational field that establishes the horizons of health and illness. This workshop explains how we are embodied in a cultural history that sets the interpreting codes of our experiences. These experiences influence our health to a greater degree than genetics and environmental toxins. Research in cross-cultural psychoneuroimmunology and medical anthropology strongly suggest that the beliefs that define health, longevity and illness in a culture, have a significant effect on our immune system and other biological processes. The dynamics of placebos, nocebos, mass sociogenic illnesses, spontaneous healing, stigmata and other biocultural phenomena will be explored within the Biocognitive model to provide participants with a practical understanding of the healing process. |
