This workshop will
explore how the spiritual beliefs and life rituals of the mystical
path can enhance our health and longevity in a modern stressful
society. Research in psychoneuroimmunology has progressed from studying
how the immune, endocrine and nervous systems communicate with each
other, to how these three biological systems are affected by our
cultural and spiritual beliefs. The accumulated wisdom of the monastic
life can offer practical tools to enhance relationships and self-worthiness
as well as override the negative effects of social stressors. By
studying spiritual beliefs, mind-body scientists are beginning to
show how compassion, forgiveness, solitude and love can enhance
immune function while hatred, isolation, revenge and fear create
imbalances that may lead to illnesses related to under-immunity
(cancer) or autoimmunity (rheumatoid arthritis). Rather than naïve
humanism in the face of evil, this workshop will also teach how
righteous anger is healthy when protecting the innocent whereas
pseudo-indignation is deleterious when used to shame or dishonor
others. Participants will learn how the ethical codes of the mystical
life parallel the functional rules of a healthy immune system.
Dr. Martinez
is a clinical psychologist who lectures worldwide on his theory
of Biocognition (how cultural beliefs affect the immune system and
longevity). He specializes in psychoneuroimmunology and has published
numerous professional articles on biocognitive psychology. In his
new psychological novel “The Man from Autumn”, he explores how biocognitive
science and the wisdom of theologian mystics can converge to treat
psycho-spiritual conflicts. Dr. Martinez has investigated cases
of alleged stigmata for the Catholic Church.
